Analytika spent eight days collecting emissions from the Mac’s cooling fan and using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry identified seven pollutants.
Those included benzene, propanal, ethanone, isobenzofurandione, propanone and acetic acid, most of which are irritants with the exception of benzene, which is thought to increase the likelihood of cancer in people exposed to just 10 parts per million.
Analytika was alerted by a Mac user who complained of irritation to his eyes, nose and throat after using his Mac Pro for just 10 days. Other users of the desktop Mac have also complained of headaches and nausea, with some reporting that Apple has replaced parts, with mixed results.
Apple has yet to publicly acknowledge the issue. It should be noted that this was a one-off test and does not constitute any sort of proof of a widespread problem.
