Both 3G and Wi-Fi can be turned off when not in use and - particularly in the case of 3G - when coverage is limited. Turning 3G off does not affect the ability to make and receive calls, send and receive emails or text messages. Only the performance of data heavy applications should be affected. Similarly Bluetooth can be switched off when not in use - for many users that will be all the time.
Location services such as Maps can also drain battery life, as can applications such as Mail that fetch data frequently. Location services can be switched on as required, Mail can be configured to fetch manually or hourly. Checking fewer accounts will also save power.
Push email from MobileMe, Exchange and Yahoo is also a heavy power user. Disabling push and fetching messages instead can extend battery life.
Other power saving options include reducing the screens brightness and disabling EQ in the Music player.
