PowerTunes extends iTunes' reach 10:05AM, Thursday 10th July 2008
Fat Cat Software has released a new application that enables the management of multiple iTunes libraries on the same machine.

PowerTunes lets you create and switch between iTunes collections stored anywhere on the local machine. It also copies tracks and playlists between libraries, while preserving all the song data, and can even merge disparate libraries into one.

Libraries can also be shared amongst multiple user accounts on the same machine - and opened direct from the Dashboard with the included widget.

Other features will clean up libraries, finding orphaned tracks, or relinking songs listed in iTunes which cannot find their original file.

What PowerTunes won't do however, is let you spread a single library across multiple volumes. If iTunes outgrows your hard disk, the only options are to move the entire collection to a larger volume (which PowerTunes can do for you) or execute some clever chicanery combining manual organisation of new music with a tweaking of the iTunes preferences.

PowerTunes is available as a free, 30-day trial, from fatcatsoftware.com/powertunes; a licence costs $19.95.
