Microsoft patents URL completion 9:49AM, Tuesday 8th July 2008
Microsoft has been granted a patent for "inventing" the automatic completion of URLs.

The Text Entry in an Electronic Device patent describes a method for matching typed text to a list of URLs, from which the user selects the one they want.

In other words, type "ridiculous" into a browser address field, and the browser autosuggests www.ridiculous.com. Just like some web browsers, both desktop and mobile, have done for years now.

Microsoft has simply added "mobile devices" to an existing practice and claimed it as an invention. It is difficult, if not impossible, to see how this meets the two key requirements of any patent: that it is either new - a genuine invention - and it is non-obvious.
