Apple sets date for .Mac switch off 8:17AM, Tuesday 8th July 2008
Apple will take .Mac offline at 2am BST on Thursday, 10 July, before launching its successor MobileMe.

During the switchover, all .Mac services will be inaccessible with the exception of email, which will continue to be delivered to desktop email clients, the iPhone and the iPod touch.

Apple has allowed six hours to make the switch, though it says that MobileMe will be made available as soon as possible before 8am.

At least one service has already been switched on: me.com email addresses started working last week, though mac.com will continue

to work for both email and iChat. Subscribers will also be able to use the me.com ID for iChat, but it will be separate from the mac.com iChat ID and will work only as long as your MobileMe subscription is active.

All .Mac subscribers get a free upgrade to MobileMe, and most .Mac services will continue to function, including Back To My Mac, iDisk, iWeb site publishing, syncing between Macs, and photo and movie sharing in the most recent versions of iPhoto and iMovie.

In addition, storage capacity will double to 20GB (40GB for Family Packs) while storage upgrades will also be doubled at no extra charge. These increases could take up to 10 days to appear.

However some .Mac services will disappear: .Mac web bookmarks, iCards, slides and support for Panther syncing.

For more information see me.com and the .Mac to MobileMe transition FAQ.
