Apple files 34 touch patents
9:20AM, Friday 4th July 2008
Apple has filed for 34 patents relating to touch screen technologies, which should be enough to keep layers busy for the next decade or so.
Among the technologies that Apple is trying to protect are the iPhone and iPod touch's multitouch method for manipulating items on display and systems for allowing simultaneous input from two kinds of devices - such as a keypad and a multitouch panel.
Apple's patents could prove to be hotly disputed. Microsoft has already indicated that it plans to introduce touch controls in the next version of Windows, while phone makers are rushing to emulate the iPhone.
Not forgetting Typhoon Touch Technologies and SP Technologies, two companies that have already filed lawsuits alleging that the iPhone violates their patents.
MacNN has more details of Apple's applications.
