Warner adds download to Blu-ray 7:43AM, Thursday 26th June 2008
It has taken some time, but Hollywood studios are slowly waking up to the fact that movie viewers want to be able to store a digital copy of the films that they buy on DVD and Blu-ray. Early this year, Fox began including iTunes- and Windows Media-compatible copies of selected releases on DVDs and Blu-ray discs. Now Warner is providing free downloads.

The Blu-ray release of 10,000 BC includes a link to download a copy of the movie from iTunes, for playing on a computer, iPod or, via Apple TV, a television.

Warner Home Video said that the decision to supply a download link rather than an on-disc copy was due to capacity constraints on the Blu-ray disc.

At this week's Home Media Expo in Las Vegas, movie distributors have been urging both studios and retailers to raise the profile of digital copies.

Frank Wolbert, senior vice president at Baker & Taylor told Video Business: "I don't think the studios are doing a good job promoting titles, [because] you don't know which ones have digital copy."
