Apple releases huge Leopard update 8:31AM, Thursday 29th May 2008
Apple has released the latest Leopard update and at 420MB on Intel Macs, OS X 10.5.3 ranks as its heftiest update ever.

The PPC version comes in at a much lighter 198MB - provided you grab it via Software Update. The update is so large in order to accommodate a reported 35,000 file changes, which should keep Spotlight busy for a while.

The list of changes is extensive, albeit comprising Apple's typically brief explanation of the issues addressed. Automator, iCal, iChat, Mail, Parental Controls, Spaces, Time Machine and VoiceOver each get half a dozen or so fixes, while there are system-wide patches for issues ranging from Helvetica Narrow replacing Helvetica, .Mac syncing of Dashboard widgets, Spotlight searching of AFP file servers and Safari reliability when connecting to the Internet through a Microsoft ISA proxy. and requires 10.5.2; a 536MB Combo update is available for updating systems running earlier Leopard versions.

Apple recommends that you backup before installation and ensure that the installation process is not interrupted, however long it may seem to be taking - make sure laptops are connected to the mains. A double restart during the installation is to be expected.

Security

OS X 10.5.3 includes the Leopard content of (Security Update 2008-003) that addresses vulnerabilities in file sharing, movie files, PDF handling printing, Flash, iCal, email and more.

Mac OS X Server

OS X Server 10.5.3 has also been released and weighs in at almost 500MB; fixes are listed in About the Mac OS X 10.5.3 Server update.

Digital Camera Raw Compatibility

Apple has also released Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.1 which extends raw file support in iPhoto '08 and Aperture 2 to include new Canon, Epson, Leaf and Pentax formats. The update is also available via Software Update.
