The figures reflect the fact that Apple sells just one computer, the Mac mini, for less than $1,000, while mainstream PC makers tend to target the $750 to $1,000 market, notes Fortune's Apple 2.0 blog. Nonetheless, in the markets it tackles, whether that is $1,000 PCs, music players or downloads,

Across the entire PC market, Apple had 14% of retail sales, roughly twice its total market share. It is difficult to underestimate the effect that Apple's retail strategy has has on its performance over the past two or three years, a point made by Stephen Baker, NPD's vice president of industry analysis.
"Apple has got better distribution than it's had in the last 15 years," Baker told eWeek. "They're in the right spot right now."
And it is a point that is not lost on Apple, which said last week that it is keen to replicate its retail success internationally.
