New iMacs get next-gen Intel technology 9:34AM, Tuesday 29th April 2008
Intel has provided Apple with a set of customised Core 2 Duo processors to power the upgraded iMacs that were introduced on Monday.

The chips are a "special" version of Intel's current 45nm Penryn processor that have been tweaked to match the specification of the chip-maker's forthcoming Montevina platform. Specifically they support a faster, 1,066MHz frontside bus - the connection between the processor and other components on the motherboard - and include a larger, 6MB cache.

Apple is now beginning to make a habit of stealing a march on PC makers. Last April's revision of the Mac Pro shipped with quad core processors that were not officially available. And the MacBook Air, unveiled in January, employs Montevina technology to reduce the size of its processor.
