Apple opens Aperture to plugins 3:45PM, Friday 28th March 2008
Apple has announced the release of Aperture 2.1, introducing a new, open plugin architecture. This enables will to incorporate specialised imaging tools from both Apple and third party developers.

The update includes the Apple-developed plugin, Dodge & Burn, which adds brush-based tools for dodge (lighten), burn (darken), contrast, saturation, sharpen and blur. Over the coming months, third party software developers will deliver image editing plugins for localised editing, filters and effects, noise analysis and reduction, fisheye lens correction and more.

By clicking on one or more images within Aperture, users can choose from a menu of installed plugins and apply imaging operations

to either TIFF or RAW images. Apple says that it is working closely with developers to bring the most requested plugins to Aperture.

These include: Nik Software's Viveza plugin to selectively control and adjust colour and light in digital images; PictureCode's Noise Ninja that delivers advanced high ISO noise analysis and reduction; Digital Film Tools' Power Stroke to quickly mask and intuitively perform targeted adjustments; The Tiffen Company's Dfx suite of creative filters and effects; dvGarage's dpMatte, a chroma key tool for creating composites and HDRtoner that enables the selection of multiple photos to create a single high dynamic range (HDR) image; and Image Trends' range of plugins that include Fisheye-Hemi to correct fisheye lens distortion, ShineOff to remove shine from faces and PearlyWhites to whiten and brighten teeth.

Aperture 2.1 is available immediately as a free update to current Aperture 2.0 users from apple.com/aperture/download.
