HTML 5's media tags and offline storage support also debut. The former makes it easier to add video and audio to a page and control it through a scripting API. The introduction of offline storage allows web-based applications to store information on the user's computer, saving on time and bandwidth by not having to repeatedly download it over the internet.
Apple also continues to emphasise Safari's HTML and JavaScript performance over other browsers, though the figures listed at the Safari web page and the Safari in Depth document (downloadable from the same page) appear out of sync. The latter indicates a closing of the gap with Firefox 2 and Opera 9.
Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later is required to run the browser, while Windows users will need XP or Vista. Both versions can be downloaded from Apple's website, and through Software Update for Mac users.
