The group is working on architecture that will allow Bluetooth-enabled products to use Wi-Fi adapters to increase available bandwidth for data transfer.

"What we're doing is taking classic Bluetooth connections - using Bluetooth protocols, profiles, security and other architectural elements - and allowing it to jump on top of the already present 802.11 radio, when necessary, to send bulky entertainment data faster," says Michael Foley, executive director of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group.

The architecture will be called "Alternate MAC/PHY", and could be available in commercial products by the middle of 2009, claims Foley.

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group announced in 2006 that it would develop ultra wideband to allow faster Bluetooth transfer speeds, but this has yet to emerge as a working standard.
