MWSF: Elgato introduces EyeTV 3 with Leopard-inspired interface 1:46AM, Wednesday 16th January 2008
Elgato today released EyeTV 3 at Macworld Expo, taking a great deal of inspiration from Leopard for its new user interface but also for improved search functionality.

The new user interface introduces a sidebar and Cover Flow, as seen in iTunes and on the iPod touch and iPhone.

This latest release doesn't just offer a presentational overhaul though. Smart Guides let you search the electronic program guide using multiple criteria, with the option of automatically recording every result of the search, so you need never miss an episode of Lost or

Coronation Street. A limit can also be set on how many episodes of a series are kept on the hard disk, should disk space be tight.

Wi-Fi access was previously introduced in EyeTV 2.5, allowing iPod touch and iPhone users to watch recordings wirelessly over the network. Now there's support for a wider range of smartphones, and recordings can be shared with other Macs just as with iTunes does with music. Libraries can be password protected as well.

Crucially for notebook users, scanned channels can be saved according to location, saving the hassle of retuning if your MacBook is moved from home to an area with differing reception, which sees likely as the digital switchover continues.

We'll be reviewing EyeTV 3 very soon, although it is available immediately from Elgato's online store for £59.95. EyeTV 2 users can upgrade for £39.95, or for free if purchased after 1 December 2007, regardless of it being a standalone purchase or bundled with hardware.
