Free Photoshop rival goes Mac-native

Open source programmers have taken a significant step towards developing a version of the Gimp image editing application that will run natively within Mac OS X.
imminent release version of Gimp (GNU Image Manipulation Program) that does not require an installation of Apple's X11 software should provide the software with a much wider user base, which can only help its development by increasing the amount of feedback and bug reports. And with Adobe Photoshop CS3 expected to raise the bar for image editing on the Mac when it is unveiled tomorrow, there should certainly be increased interest in powerful, free alternatives such as this.
A post on the Gimp Developer mailing list explains that while 'things are working rather well', despite few visual glitches and unreliable elements, the native build is not yet ready for general use, not least because as things stand it is 'impossible' to package and distribute.

Gimp's X11 incarnation is available from gimp-app.sourceforge.net, with X11 available from Apple at apple.com/macosx/features/x11. Seashore, a native OS X version, is available from seashore.sourceforge.net, though in its current 0.1.8 version it contains only a subset of Gimp's total feature set.
