Though it's not unique in having an Internet connection, the combination of Safari and unlimited data are a major selling point for many iPhone users. Beyond storing personal info, there's a growing number of online applications that are tailored to the iPhone and help bring out its true potential.

They're the kind of applications that perform a dedicated task, often retrieving data from an online database such as traffic news or train timetables. That's not to say that we aren't looking forward to a whole new world of iPhone applications when the SDK arrives. But while we wait to see what it holds in store, we've also checked out the best iPhone web applications out there.

Here are eight web applications that will quickly prove their worth as much as native iPhone applications. If you've updated your iPhone's firmware to version 1.1.3, you can easily add any of these web applications to you Home screen as well. Several of them are so useful that we expect you'll be using them on a daily basis. Some of them also work well as Dashboard widgets by using Leopard's web clips feature in Safari.
