SubEthaEdit   [MacUser]
COMPANY: Coding Monkeys PRICE: $29(about £21)

Among this crowd, SubEthaEdit is unique. It's the only application that allows for simultaneous editing by multiple authors, and it can do this across a whole range of different applications, meaning it'll play so happily with alternatives, like Coda, that the collaborating authors can be running any one of a half-dozen different applications.

It works because it's built on top of the SubEtha engine, which swaps live data with other compatible applications online.

As such, it's highly versatile, and can be used just as effectively as a collaborative word processor as it can a group programming tool. It can be tailored to work with more than 20 different coding types, including Java and CSS.

We tested it by opening a new document in Coda and then sharing it via Bonjour (from Coda's file menu). It then appeared as an icon user our Coda user's name in the SubEthaEdit participants window. Double-clicking it let us open it in SubEthaEdit and edit it simultaneously on both machines, with amendments showing in both systems simultaneously. It's a very impressive feat, and earns SubEthaEdit our Editor's Choice.
