Keyboard

1 The most important thing with a keyboard is to buy one that you find comfortable. You can often try them out in larger Mac retailers' showrooms, so make sure you test your chosen model if possible. Whether you choose one with split keys or a linear, horizontal arrangement will depend on your personal preference, and although many claim that the natural v-shaped layouts are better for your wrists because they follow the inward-turning lines of your arms, elevation is a more important consideration.
Try this experiment: sit upright in your chair and raise your forearms up so they are at the height of your keyboard. Now relax your wrists. See the angle at which they fall? Just slightly below horizontal, this is their natural position, and is the one you should adopt when typing, rather than the slightly upturned angle most of us assume. The Microsoft Natural Ergonomic keyboard is well designed in this respect, with an inverted slope going away from you thanks to a wedge-like strut running along the front edge. Don't be tempted to use a wrist rest while typing: it's for when you're resting - not working. |
