Bigger numbers aren't always better. Although the MVX25i has a smaller numerical model name than its MVX250i stable mate, it's actually superior in many ways. For a start, the 1/3.4in CCD offers 2.23 megapixels, a resolution only bettered by Sony's DCR-PC350. But as with all consumer-grade 'megapixel' camcorders, the MVX25i's high-resolution sensor is aimed at digital photography. The raw resolution of 1,632 x 1,224 is considerably lower than that offered by the DCR-PC350 or Panasonic's NVGS400B, but detail and fidelity were still good. You'll achieve acceptable results printing on standard-sized photographic paper. The MVX25i offers superb video image quality as well. In fact, its performance both indoors and out was bettered only by Panasonic's NVGS400B and Sony's DCR-HC1000, both of which are much more expensive. The latter's three-CCD sensors gave them fractionally superior tonal ranges, but the MVX25i was on par for detail, resolution and contrast. The Canon's large CCD paid dividends
The range of features is comprehensive for an enthusiast too. Manual focus is activated by a discrete button and controlled with the lens ring. There's also a separate button for exposure but not for shutter, which must be accessed through the menu system. The manual controls even extend to audio, which is implemented well. Once audio has been switched to manual using the button under the 2.5in LCD panel, the menu jog dial then doubles as a level control, giving you immediate access to gain adjustments. An unobtrusive onscreen meter keeps track of current and peak levels. As well as a powered accessory shoe supporting proprietary microphones and video lights, microphone and headphone sockets are available for third-party attachments. Tapes are loaded from the top, too, making tripod usage easier. One feature that's missing, though, is progressive scan capability. For the hobbyist aiming at a film look, this is a disappointment and would have made a useful addition to the 16:9 widescreen mode. Overall, the MVX25i is an impressive camcorder. Video performance is one of the best we've seen for a single-chip unit, and the range of features on offer will easily satisfy the enthusiast. Even the price is reasonable. If your budget doesn't stretch to a semi-professional, three-chip unit such as the Labs-winning Panasonic NVGS400B, the MVX25i would make a more than adequate substitute. Sponsored Links
