Football Manager 2008   [PC Pro]

It's been a bumper year for games. DirectX 10 might not have offered everything we were promised, but the latest crop of consoles has meant a steady stream of incredible-looking, engrossing games in every imaginable category. Here's our pick of the very best.

The football strategy game has been around since the incarnation of the humble spreadsheet, but it's never been as good, nor as likely to swallow your entire weekend, as Football Manager 2008. It's incredibly intuitive, and the AI is the product of years of refinements. Even your staff have individual strengths and weaknesses that affect the progression of your team. And that's before you play a match - there's plenty to occupy you during 90 minutes of the game, and seeing your strategies come off is joyful. There are tiny changes to be made in both attack and defence, allowing you to tailor your style to suit your players. The downside is coming up with new excuses for office lateness. Even worse, system requirements are so lowly you could run it on an office PC. But you didn't hear that from us.
