Voted for by PC Pro's team of Real World Contributing Editors, this award is for the company that – in their view – has made the biggest difference to business IT in 2008. What pushed VMware above the rest was simple: its software, both VMware Server and VMware Converter, has been rolled out in many business and created real savings.

Highly Commended: Intel, Research in Motion

Finalists:

Congratulations also to the seven other finalists. First of all to DrayTek, a reflection of the strength of its entire range of security devices – particularly the DrayTek VigorPro 5500, which won a PC Pro Recommend award earlier this year.

HP was another challenging for awards, with one of our judges praising it for "pushing the server envelope". Its ProLiant series drew particular praise, for the ILO2 management interface, the design triumph of multi-processor and multi-core in a 1U form factor, the move to SAS RAID and much more besides.

Another judge was full of praise for the efforts of Lenovo in 2008. Why? "...for its brilliant, versatile SFF business PC cases". Once again this was reflected in a recent PC Pro review, with the Lenovo ThinkCentre M57 picking up a Recommended award.

Some might think Microsoft a more controversial choice, but its products have continued to power many a desktop PC and server during 2008. The product that swung it for our judges, though, was Windows Server 2008: a good implementation can make a huge difference to a modern business.

NetSupport is a name that should be familiar to anyone who regularly reads the PC Pro Business section, and to any business that needs to offer remote support. Improved desktop management is the key reason for the success of its latest iteration, but we also applaud the school-specific version.

Security firm Sophos won its place on our shortlist of finalists due to the latest incarnation of the Web Appliance, designed to be a one-stop solution for all forms of malware. Originally launched in 2007, the latest version – released in June 2008 – beefs up the security without increasing the cost.

The final word goes to VeryPC for its "Designed for" systems. Launched in late 2007, VeryPC's Designed for range targets specific applications – such as SolidWorks, Maya and 3ds Max – that need a particular selection of hardware to run at optimum speed. It's great to see a small British company take on the multinational giants in such an arena.
