Hey
Im here too learn the Pros and Cons of linux, i want too start learning all i can about computers from all espects. I have a custom made pc (by me) Not the best of made. i use vista on it and i want too know how too programme for a cereer move. However i want too learn all i can about everything in my spare time and cant afford too go college so, i want too be taught by people who want too give the answers.
So, i want too know the benefits of linux too make the move. Also i would like too have people teach me how too use it. I will use this forum as my starting point asking the most basic too the most difficult ones.
This also gives people a chance too share their ideas with others and discuss the best or worst ways too do things. debaiting is a good way so, i wish too ask the questions too gain knowledge while people get too agrue the fact whos right or wrongn which everyone likes too do.
If you think i have given too much detail let me know or not enough just say. im here too learn and discuss my own ideas over time with a group of friends or rivals lol.

Re: What are the Pros and Cons of linux
Looks like I answered this in the Meeting Place before seeing your post here. I'll not repeat.
Just one thing I will note, many Linux users have gotten a reputation for being less than friendly with new users. While some (there are always a few) do like to think they are superior because they (think) they know it all, for the most part you will get help and encouragement in finding your way around.
That said, there are reasons why some get impatient with 'newbies'. Linux does have a rather steep learning curve for those that wish to delve below the surface and will require a degree of effort on the part of the new comer to discover for themselves how to do things.
This firstly means searching before posting questions. Remember as a starter, a lot of the questions you have will have been asked by many others over the years. Secondly, a little trial-and-error is encouraged.
Thus, when it comes to posting questions in Linux forums, the general "I am trying to/how do I..." should be accompanied by "I've tried doing this & this..." together with "I've looked through this & that forum/searched this site/web..."
Both of the 'try/look' attempts should be genuine, of course. Check first, say what you've tried and you'll find sarcastic and unhelpful posts will be much fewer.
Good luck & have a happy penguin

Re: What are the Pros and Cons of linux
Ok thanks for the help. I'll differently pick up a old unit too have a look on linux and ask questions when needed, as you said before i have noticed what you were on about having people not wanting too help. i'll do a little research and have a little go and come back with what i have done.
Do you think you could send me on the right direction with what post i might find helpful and what not. your help would be much helpful

Re: What are the Pros and Cons of linux
Ok, as a starting point, here is as good a place as any.
There are quite a few forums, you'll find - Have a read thought a few postings before asking anything. Don't jump in saying you 'generally want to learn' as that's what the forums are there for anyway.
Read, search & only then ask something specific if you get stuck - you got the idea.
Note the .org sites especially, they tend to be the non-profit organisations
