Phorm has launched a new consumer service called Webwise Discover - but it's still waiting for a British ISP to roll out its highly controversial tech ...

It would be interesting to find out what they were told and how the questions were framed. I bet the phrase "deep packet inspection" didn't get mentioned! |

Its totally guaranteed that the implications to privacy and bandwidth were totally omitted or glossed over with jargon. _________________ Vista64 UE SP1

| If I knew that my ISP is using Phorm I would seriously consider changing it and I would pretend to be made aware about such a service like Phorm via letter. |

I have webwise trapped at the router; the day I get a router warning is the day I shut down access to my ISP and find another |

Could you enlighten me as to what you put in the router settings for that please? |

| I'm wondering how deep packet inspection will deliver relevant ads to me. Deep packet inspection could tell that one member of my household loves the "Jonas Brothers", that one member loves "Britney Spears Naked", and that one wants to buy super strength laxative, but it can't deliver the right ads to the right people therefor it's still as useless to me as random ads are. All that it will end up doing is invading my privacy and possibly delivering dodgy ads profering picutres of Britney Spears in her birthday suit to my 11 year old daughter. |

I would like a piece of that action, too. |

I took part in the survey. It was very much framed as a "hey, wouldn't it be great if you could go to a web page and be given loads of cool links to things that interest you without the hassle of having to search for it" type of thing. And no, deep packet inspection wasn't mentioned.
Rather worryingly the way it was presented would probably tempt a lot of people to sign up without understanding the implications - It took me a couple of minutes to twig what the survey was really about and I've been following the phorm saga for a while.
Needless to say I wasn't part of the 76% approval rating. |

Same here. Even having cable would not stop me from switching back to ADSL. _________________ I am still writing my autobiography at the moment and I expect it to be finished in late 2016. I think that I now have enough for a second volume.

Well surveys can prove just about anything that you want them to - I would hardly expect a survey commissioned by phorm to produce a result negative to their image! Nor indeed would any company - Kellogs would not publish a survey that said 80% of the public dont like cornflakes!
Ignoring the obvious bias in how the (unpublished) questions would have been framed - I would question the number of responses that they have used - 2000 is a drop in the ocean!
If they want a representative response then they should announce the survey in as many computing and general publications that will give space to it and leave it open for long enough so that everyone has the chance to have their say!
If I were an ISP then I would survey all my customers long before I entered into any agreement with a service like this |

As long as Phorm do not write the question! _________________ I am still writing my autobiography at the moment and I expect it to be finished in late 2016. I think that I now have enough for a second volume.

Alternatively, they could put up their webwise system as a public proxy at a datacenter somewhere and publish its IP address and instuctions of how to configure popular browsers to route http traffic through it.
If 76% or the population want webwise/discover, then they should have no problems attracting masses of users, and they can use that to convince the ISPs to buy and install phorm's boxes. More likely though, they'd just attract a bunch of journalists, advertisers and geeks wanting to find out how it works and that would show the ISP how unpopular it would be. |

In the Web Filter of my router I add webwise.com, (and a few others), then if any browser link tries to route to an IP address that DNS resolves to webwise (Phorm's domain), my router blocks it and displays a warning banner in the offending browser.
