What about Mail readers who only have VCRs? They'd be about as relevant in the modern world as the 4% of computer users who have Macs.

That figure is probably out of date already. In the US it is probably closer to 8% now

There are other computers apart from macs which have slot-loading drives - e.g. the Dell M1330 and M1530. Why do Mac users have to always jump up and down and claim people are discriminating against them? Realistically, how many of them would a) actually have bought the Mail and b) watched the DVD even if they had?

There's also the issue of small-size CDs which come with some MP3 players and the like - these also cannot be used in slot-load drives. Basically, if you buy a computer with a lot-load drive you have to accept this - or buy a tray-load USB drive.

I doubt they did.

I expect one journo with a mac mentioned it to another journo who thought: "there's a story here", and wasn't aware of the other PC's, Media Centre's and even DVD players that could not cope with the floppy disk.

Err, because most DRM systems only use Windows for starters. At least iTunes is able to be used by Windows or Mac users. Then the Linux brigade will jump and down because iTunes doesn't work for them.

My original complaint is triggered because my wife wanted to watch the film, and having slot loading Macs AND an ordinary DVD player which also has a slot loading mechanism, it makes the damn thing impossible to play. In addition to this, there was no advertising as to the fact that this disc would not be able to be played on such DVD players, and as such that the DVD itself does not to conform to the DVD Forum specifications.

Most of the drivers for those type of devices are downloadable from the manufacturer's web site. I can't stand those business CD card things anyway, and as for those camcorder DVDs which use the smaller size discs - the quality of image is crap anyway and wouldn't ever use one.

The other problem is that there is a perceived difference. I have a standard dvd player, I would not be impressed by a "free dvd" that did not look and feel like a dvd. It will just be more disposable tat to tip out of my newspaper. A real dvd one might be tempted to keep, a floppy non-standard one is only going to end up in one place.

The thing is, the freebie DVDs from newspapers that I've collected over the years are still used from time to time. So I don't see the need to go to a non-standard "DVD" for the sake that some people will simply ditch it - hence the newspaper should consider stopping putting DVDs WITH the paper if they don't want wastage.

It will hose PS3 slot loaders as well.

I know I'm a bit late to the conversation but thought I'd jump in anyway.

The problem with the EcoDisc and slot loading drives is as someone has already said, it can get stuck inside the drive. This is because as the disc ejects it can get caught on the inside of the drive and jams. I also agree there is very little warning about this on the packaging and disc, it also shouldn't be called a DVD as it doesn't comply with the DVD standard.

I also wouldn't be conned by the fact that the EcoDisc is meant to be environmentally friendly, it was made pure and simply to undercut the competition. As you'll find that a company called ODS is behind the manufacturing of the EcoDisc and I can assure you the last thing they have in mind is the environment!

So, I think it is good that this has come to light and managed to make headlines.

As for whether the film is any good or who prefers a Mac, I don't really care.

But the issue here isn't DRM systems - it's the physical design of the disc and this will cause exactly the same problems for any slot-load drive, whether or not it happens to be in a Mac.

Also people could sell them as a bundle on eBay or keep them for when the reality TV hits overload. I prefer standard DVD's.

They don't sell the Mail in the U.S. (Well not to any noticable amount, I hope. They got enough problems over there as it is Razz), so the Mac usage figures over there are irrelevant - much like the article saying it's the Mac owners' that are upset
Maybe if it said 'owners' of slot loading DVD players' instead of Mac users... Rolling Eyes

It's obvious to me that these DVDs need to be in some form of paper enclosure to ensure that they have the rigidity to allow them to be inserted into slot loading drives.

Too easy - can't have a proper rant if you're going to be sensible Wink

As for the billions - I always thought it logical to follow the increases in the same way:

Hundred thousand,
Thousand thousand (million)

Hundred million,
Thousand million,
Million million (billion)
etc

Well I think that the numbers here are climbing rapidly as well. Though as has been commented there are many others affected other than just mac users. Also why would anyone admit to being a Mail reader anyway?

A guy in work reads the mail, and consequently so does everybody around him Laughing

I'm the exception - I just pinch the Sun occasionally to challenge myself with their crossword with the out of context answers Laughing Laughing Laughing

Getting back to the Mail, it's basically a slightly more upmarket version of the Sun, with pictures of skimpily dressed women (usually actresses with the Mail) to keep you interested...

Also, have you noticed just how many of the more 'techy' people on the forums seem so anti-Mail? Confused

funny that. I read the Daily mail but I also read the observer/guardian as well. Its just the good old stereotyping. I mean who would think an id wanting, nuclear power wanting, friend to big buisness with sleazy finances would be the labour party shouldn't that be the Tories ground Laughing
