Never mind the iTunes and iPhone pricing - just done a quick check on the new iPod Touch. Its $399 in the US, and £269 in the UK.

A quick currency conversion shows that $399 = £197. How on earth can a cost that is 36.5% more expensive possibly be justified????

Technically it is a 20% hike (VAT being the other 17.5%). Even so, that is a hell of a lot for what amounts to shipping.

Sorry my math may be dodgy in my old age but should the refund difference not be $200 not $100?

I think the $100 rebate was for those who bought the product 15+ days before the price drop

This is NOT a rebate it is as in the article an "in-store credit" of some kind, so unless you want to buy $100 of Apple stuff its worthless. Having been shafted in the first place why bother?

Not quite, the offer is $100 of goods from Apple Stores. That includes much more than just Apple stuff.

Point taken, but do you get an additional "rebate" to cover the cost of getting to your "local" Apple store? Wink

Unlikely, since all you need to do is fire up a browser.

Do you get free shipping on all items then (maybe that'll be part of the deal)? But we're still only accessing "Apple stuff". Having never darkened the door of any of their emporia, I assumed they had a greater range at the physical stores. I appreciate you can buy other manufacturers' products, but all specifically Apple-related, so unless you want more (loosely) Apple goodies, you're still stuffed.

Well, you can buy Kensington mice, MS keyboards and mice, notebook covers, printers, external hard drives and digital cameras - all of which work with other operating systems, presumably.

As for shipping - I've never been charged on any order from the online store.

So a Windows junkie could happily spend their rebate on non-Apple products, use it on their Windows box and not pay shipping.

Wow – people must have been seriously p*ssed off – it can’t be that often a company starts crediting it’s customers on this scale… Though it's hardly a massive loss to Apple in the profit sense, as the article points out, the faithful just got tested somewhat...

The offer applies to people who bought iPhones at Apple or AT&T stores.

Does this apply to online sales of the iPhone? I assume it would…

A surprisingly clumsy move by Apple. Breaking the price drops into two or three increments would have been an easy way to avoid the bad headlines.

However, those who are complaining really shouldn't be surprised. You always pay a premium for being an early adopter of virtually any new technology.
