Hi , I have 2 Pc's both running Windows Xp Pro
Sp3 . No 3rd party firewalls running . ICF running on both . Pc's connected to Netgear Gs 108t Switch connected to Bt Business Router.
Dhcp running . Pc's both on WorkGroup.
Simple file sharing switched off . Same subnet and Ip Range . Guest account enabled on both .When I go into Network Places to view workgroup computers , I get a long pause and then the following error .Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is currently not available.
I have read various fixes but they all seem hit and miss . Any advice would be most welcome. |

Several points.
Turn simple sharing back on.
You must have a password and logon, otherwise the firewall will NOT allow shares.
You won't see anything unless you have actuall shared something. _________________ I cannot remember the last time I forgot something. |

Turn simple file sharing back on . This goes against everything I have read .
Passwords are in place. One folder is being shared on 1 Pc . Surely at the basic level, I should be able to see the computers Name I am sat at in Network places . I have a Nas Device connected to the same switch . The shares appear for this and the Device icon . But not the two computer icons under workgroup . |

Is the workgroup name definately the same on both PCs? it may be worth specifying a new name on both of them and restarting, change it from Workgroup to Home or something similar. _________________ System Error... Please reboot universe. |

Yes they are both set to workgroup , I could try a different name . The Pc's are at a garage . I'll try this when I am there . I did run the Networking wizard a couple of times which defaults to MSHOME which i changed to workgroup . I have read things about Net Bt,
Netbios over tcp instead of auto enabled.
This problem seems to vary common and many reported fixes . |

Just been doing some testing . I have an Imac
running Windows Xp Pro in a Virtual Machine .
Same scenario , click on view workgroup computers in My Network places , long hang followed by same error message . Although I have no networked machines I expected to see the host Pc and any shares or Entire windows network listed none were there due to access denied error . I changed the workgroup name from Workgroup to MSHOME , rebooted and viola , MSHOME appeared along with Entire windows Network along with Web client Network.
Shares listed . Although Workgroup is still listed alongside MSHOME but cannot be accessed due to error. Can someone explain this one ? |

I think its probably some legacy settings kscking around from the network wizard, if they magically start working under MSHome.
You could try naming the workgroup something completely different, like alice or bannana...
and see if the error persists, or just leave it at MSHome if that works _________________ System Error... Please reboot universe. |
