Too hot?
I have decided to do some overclocking on my system, it's a first time thing, though i have been researching for absolutely ages.
I decided to check my system as is to ascertain whether i can overclock and got some results that have me a bit confused.
When I built this sytem i had overclocking in mind.
specs:
core2duo e8400 with tuniq tower
Lanparty DK P45-T2RS PLUS
OCZ reaper HPC pc2-6400
windows vista home 64bit
with my cpu at stock speeds, tuniq tower on full speed (1934RPM) i'm getting a Prime95 small FFT getting temps of 40 and 50 across the cores. Ive looked on other sites and these seem to be stock cooling temp on load.
I then decided to overclock anyways, using the mobos supplied tool ABS. this threw the system to 3.6 and windows loaded happily (im not sure what the memory settings are, think they get locked) but when i ran Prime 95 this time, the core temps were just scraping 70. 10 mins later and the system bluescreened and reset. 3.6 doesnt seem like a major oc to ask for.
Could these temps be the HSF's fault? maybe case? it all seems cool, and im pretty sure i installed the HSF properly.
Thanks in advance for any advice,
Dev

Just my 2 cents, those stock temps under load seem a little high, would it be possible to get stock temps with the tower on full speed? Also the fact there's a 10 degrees difference between cores points to the HSF possibly being seated incorrectly, I have one in my system and have had trouble getting it sitting perfect in the past. Also if your overclocking it's better to use ther BOIS rather than software i think it's pretty widely accepted by anyone who's familiar with overclocking. What case are you using just out of interest?

That is full speed. Case is hiper osiris. Tons of space/ventilation. Dont have anything to check heat internally but if i put my hand in i cant feel too much warmth.
those temps i gave you are the 3 temps available on speedfan. first is called the cpu temp, others are the core temps, the cores are running the same.

I see, could you post what the temps are on speedfan at idle? Try using a different program like coretemp too just to get a definate reading.

coretemp always confirms, as does realtemp. idle is 20. cores are 30
edit: I'm using the bios to adjust, but i can seem to find anything to lock divider. This could be one of problems aswell as memory is being oc'ed at same time. it is supposed to be overclockable mem, but id rather do this bit by bit, so if something is going wrong i can find the fault easier.

Very odd
Right, this is weird. I have just remounted my HSF, reapplied with arctic silver this time, booted up, and....hmmm now i have some weird results.
idle: CPU 20 core0 30 core1 39
load: CPU 37 core0 45 core1 45
:/
i've read in a few places about stuck temp sensors on the e8400, is it a problem? if its just not dropping below 39 im presuming its a sensor thing, otherwise why am i getting similar temps with load?
When i first got this i thought that the AS5 hadn't been put right so redid, and still same results.
If this isn't a problem i'm fairly happy as it means i have shaved 5 degrees off of load temps.
Any ideas?
Also on another point, i couldn't quite figure out why i did this, i dnt have pc2-6400, it's pc2-8500, its just its underclocked, if anyone has ideas how to sort this on this board, gimme a shout. ty in advance

sounds like stuck sensors my e8600 core temps are about 10deg apart till they get over 40c then they read the same.
As for your ram if you are on 400fsb for 3.6ghz the ram will run at 800 at 1.1, you should be able to run on different strap to get to 1066, not having used your board so cant really help on exact settings.

right, well the remount has worked, albeit now with a stuck sensor. been working all day and now have my e8400 @ 3.6 core temps are 51 on each core and happy. been running prime95 small fft for 30 mins and no problem. been told this should go to 4.4 if a good chip, so lets see. cheers for the help everyone.
