Dell: The Crapware Con
Posted on 29 Oct 2009 at 14:29
Dell’s software suite was one of the most impressive, with our test machine booting in less than a minute-and-a-half with all the apps running, and a mere 37 seconds with every extra disabled. Benchmark performance was barely dented, either.
The only visible desktop application was the Mac OS X-style dock that sat across the top of the screen, offering links to internet, office, photo and music applications.
New icons can be added by dragging and dropping, and the dock can be hidden and prevented from loading when the PC boots. Each option is accompanied by a small video demonstrating its functionality.

Dell’s installed software consumed only 490MB of hard disk space and, with only 21 non-Microsoft services and 20 applications loading on boot, it’s one of the sleekest systems we tested, although its 1.18GB memory footprint is disappointing.
Despite this, Dell’s software offered good performance alongside the occasional bit of useful software. If you’re searching for a system without the usual crapware then you could do a lot worse than a Dell.

No crapware on my Dell
I'm Dell-'light'ed (pun intended) to say mine had no crapware whatsoever. When I ordered my laptop I also ordered a separate Windows XP Pro which I loaded on straight away, wiping off Blista.
