3. Alcatel-Lucent 3D IPTV
Posted on 15 Apr 2009 at 11:35
One of the holy grails of technology is finally figuring out 3D displays - at the right price for consumers, without causing eye-strain, and without having to re-program existing content. Alcatel-Lucent, which operates the famous Bell Labs in New Jersey, is tackling at least one of those variables. The idea: to deliver 3D content over an IPTV network.
One of the goals for the project is to develop 3D footage that can be viewed from multiple angles, and IP allows several 3D streams to arrive in the home at once.
"Delivery of 3D necessitates higher transport bandwidths and much more flexibility, especially if interactive viewing or selection of multiple viewing angles is a requirement," said Erwin Six, team leader for video technologies at Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs. "As such, IPTV is the most suitable technology for enabling this transformation, and this is the case both in the production networks as well as in the access and core networks that deliver this content to the home."
