Take Creative's 2GB Mozaic player. At £45 inc VAT it isn't going to break the bank, but it's surprisingly stacked full of features. Not only is it capable of playing basic video at a resolution of 128 x 60 on its 1.8in screen, but more impressively it manages to squeeze in a loudspeaker, an FM radio and voice-recording facilities, too.
As well as packing in the features, the Mozaic is a great looker. It doesn't quite exude the glamour or glitz of the iPods, but its nine-button mosaic-style control panel looks funky, and the matte-black plastic chassis has just a hint of sparkle.
Sound quality is solid if unspectacular, and audio file format compatibility is also middle of the road. It supports just MP3, WMA, WAV and Audio Book formats.
What's really impressive about this player is that it's so usable. It features Creative's superb user interface and boasts most of the handy extras of the X-Fi - including an alarm clock (the built-in speaker isn't just for annoying fellow passengers on public transport), basic organiser functions, the ability to create playlists on-the-fly and bookmarks for long audio and video files.
All in all, it's a remarkable little player - the ideal stocking filler for the music-lover in your life.
