Rise of the robots

But where will that step lead us? It seems impossible to discuss the future of robotics without delving into knee-jerk clichés about robots taking over the world, but perhaps the final word should go to last year's winner of DARPA's Urban Challenge.
"Robots sometimes stun the world, inspire a lot of people and change the belief of what is possible," said William Whittaker, a Carnegie Mellon robotics professor, after his team won the 2007 challenge. "We've seen that and once the perception of what's possible changes it never goes back. This is a phenomenal thing for robotics."
