What does it take to destroy a hard disk?

How Ontrack recovered PC Pro's hard disk
Ontrack, challenged PC Pro to trash a hard drive, with the promise that it could rescue our files, the offer was too good to resist.
1 PC Pro's already defunct hard disk was thrown around the office, smashed on a desktop and dunked in a sugary cup of tea before being sent to the company, by post, for data recovery. |
2 The tea-splattered hard disk platters had to be removed and cleaned by Ontrack's engineers, who then reassembled the drive. |
3 With platters restored to their former glory and spares located for faulty mechanical parts, the drive is connected to one of the PC's in Ontrack's clean room to begin the data recovery process. Here we see the drive working with its lid removed. |
4 And here's the end result - files safely restored and copied to another drive for safe keeping. |
