Remote desktop sharing firm, LogMeIn, has launched a new service that lets users share screens immediately without prior registration.

Dubbed LogMeIn Express, the beta service allows people to share their screen with up to 100 different participants, and even hand remote control of their desktop over to their colleagues.

The person sharing their screen has to download a small, 874Kb applet - other participants can join simply by clicking on an email invite link or by entering a 12-digit code on the LogMeIn Express website.

The service performed admirably in our brief tests this morning. Although the screen refresh was a little slow (even on our relatively nippy office connection), it was perfectly clear what was going on on the shared desktop. The service even managed to stream HD video playing on YouTube to the other participants, although no audio was broadcast.

The remote control feature worked flawlessly, making the service an ideal way to quickly dive in and troubleshoot technical problems on a remote PC.

There's a small, text chat window, so that participants can discuss what's happening on the screen, although voice chat has been preserved for LogMeIn's full products.

Sounds remarkably similar to CrossLoop

Even down to the 12-digit connection code!

I wonder what the performance is like when someone "shares their screen with up to 100 different participants" on a 384 kbps uplink!

TeamViewer user

I stopped using LogMeIn in favour of TeamViewer a couple of years ago, mainly because the free version wasn't able to perform file transfers but I also preferred the UI.

Teamviewer

The free version of Teamviwer really is excellent, what I need know is a labs review of the business and free versions of these remote control products.
