According to the most recent figures I could find from the Office of National Statistics (www.statistics.gov.uk), the use of "lighting and appliances" accounts for only 12% of average household energy consumption. I'd be willing to bet that most of it's down to the hundreds of Watts of lighting power most households still consume, having failed to switch to compact fluorescent alternatives. But 60% or so goes into space heating.
So if you want to reduce your energy consumption, take a few seconds to apply Amdahl's law and put the effort where it has most impact first. Once you've turned your heating down and stopped boiling the kettle three times for every cup of tea you make (a kettle is 3kW or 12,000MCs, folks), turn off your PC (up to 1,600MCs) and then your monitor (up to 200MCs). While you're at it, switch off the light you've just left on in the bathroom (240MCs).
When you've done all that, you might want to think about unplugging your mobile phone charger - a mere 1MC.
