NTL and Microsoft join on broadcasts to mobile devices 12:39PM, Friday 11th June 2004
NTL and Microsoft are trialling digital audio and video broadcasting in the Cambridge area. The trial provides a mix of streamed audio and video material for mobile devices.

The aim is to research how well existing technologies, such as terrestrial based DVB and DAB transmitters together with Microsoft's Windows Media 9 and DRM, succeed in sending video, audio and text content to mobile devices either directly or through syncing via a PC. The trials will be including web pages, images and video and audio clips, with everything from sports to news to documentaries.

The content is being broadcast by an ntl transmitter at Milton near Cambridge. The streamed data can be received by either fixed roof top antennas or mobile hand-held devices over a wide area. The content itself is being provided by ITV, British Eurosport and Capital Radio.

Microsoft's Product Manager for in the Windows Digital Media Division Erin Cullen said, 'This trial is designed to reveal more about potential content delivery models using the compression capabilities of Windows Media 9 Series in conjunction with standards-based DAB and DVB networks. Ultimately, this research will help a wider range of consumers enjoy digital content by making it available on demand to low-cost mobile devices'.
