Ozenda AR4505GW  [Computer Buyer]
COMPANY: Ozenda PRICE: £71
RATING: ISSUE: 164  DATE: Jan 05

Verdict: Ozenda's router is easy to use, reasonably fast and comes with free technical support.

If you have a broadband Internet connection and more than one PC at home, then you could share the Net between your PCs using a standard wired network. Thing is, unless both your PCs and your Net connection are in the same room, this will mean either trailing cable all around the house, or drilling holes through walls. Instead, why not get a wireless router? Wireless networks are much faster than any broadband connection which means they're fast enough to share your Web data.

The Ozenda's is an ADSL router. This means it includes an integrated ADSL modem. To share your ADSL connection, just plug your phone line into the Ozenda, then set the router up to work with the PCs in your house.

To get started you need to connect the router to your PC for the first time. You can either do this using the network cable provided, or start straight away with a wireless connection.

We had no problems working wirelessly from the start. We switched on the router and Windows XP detected it instantly. Then type the router's own Web address into your Internet browser (for instance, Internet Explorer). This opens your router's home page. A set-up wizard then walks you through entering the Internet account details (such as username and password) given to you by your ISP when you opened your broadband account. You can also turn on security settings such as WEP so only people with your password can use your router, although WEP isn't totally secure, so stronger WPA protection is also available. The only downside is that both can slow your connection.

As well as being relatively simple to set up, the Ozenda also performed well. It transferred our 100MB of test files in a respectable 79 seconds at short distance. Signal strength did drop off at long distance though, and the same transfer took almost 4.5 minutes. If you're regularly transferring large files over your wireless network it could struggle if you have a big house, office or thick walls. However, if you're simply sharing a broadband connection, it will be fine.

Ozenda's 4505 isn't the easiest router we've come across to set up; its documentation was a bit sketchy, but it was still better than average. If you do get stuck, though, you can use Ozenda's technical support, free for year. This is a good deal, and makes this neat and nifty little router ideal for novice users.
