AMD chops chip prices 4:19PM, Monday 14th February 2005
In the wake of new Opteron servers, AMD has breathed on its processor pricing.

In addition to the Opterons, there are changes to the Sempron, Athlon 64, Mobile Athlon 64 and MP line of processors.

Beginning with the Opterons, the new two- and eight way models are at priced at $851 and $1,514, respectively. To make way for the new models, all the pricing has shuffled down one level, i.e. the 848 now costs what the 846 previously did and the 846 costs what the 844 did. Generally speaking, the cuts across the Opteron range are in the 20 per cent bracket, from single- to eight-way models. Leading the way, however, is the single-way workstation-targeted Model 150, which is cut by 34.5 per cent to $417.

The Sempron sees price cuts of up to 17 per cent at the top of the range. While the 3100+ falls 9.5 per cent to $114, pricing is also differentiated between Socket

A and Socket 754 offerings for the 3000+, 2800+ and 2600+. Similarly, Mobile Semprons see price cuts of 17 per cent, 19 per cent and eight per cent, to $100, $87 and $77, for the 3000+, 2800+ and 2600+, respectively.

Meanwhile, the top-of-the-range Athlon 64 4000+ is cut by 12 per cent to $643. But it is the following chips that see the biggest cuts - reduced by a third: the 3800+ falls to $424 and the 3700+ to $329, which represent a cut of 34 and 30 per cent respectively. Other Athlon 64s are cut in the region of eight per cent.

For the mobile equivalents - the Mobile AMD Athlon 64, and its Low Voltage cousin - there are cuts of around seven per cent. The leading 3400+ is now priced at $228 (down 6 per cent) while the LV 3000+ is $209 (down 13 per cent).

And not for the fist time, AMD is actually increasing some prices for existing processors. In this case it is for the old style, non-64-bit multi-way server processor, the MP. The 2800+ and 2600+ go up 15 per cent, to $201 and $151 respectively.

Athlon XPs are also missing off the pricing sheet, but what we should read into this we are not exactly sure... AMD were not available for comment at time of writing.

As always, all prices quoted are based on 1,000 unit direct orders.
