The chip was absent from AMD's latest pricing sheet - AMD chops chip prices - published on Monday. An AMD spokesperson has later confirmed to us that: 'the chip will be discontinued after this quarter'.
There will be still be a certain amount of stock out among retailers and manufacturers, which will prolong its end beyond this quarter's official cut off point. But the spokesperson couldn't predict how long this might be.
Even up to this point AMD had pruned back the range and was only selling three XP chips: the 3200+, the 3000+ and 2800+ desktop processors.
Once the desktop crown for AMD, the Athlon XP no longer fits in with its 64-bit strategy, launched in September 2003 with its Athlon 64 and the Athlon 64 FX.
