Although the Taiwan raids are the most recent discovery of a 're-marking' operation, the problem goes back many years with both AMD and Intel customers being the targets of the fraud.
Various schemes have been tried by both companies to provide some kind of guarantee of authenticity. Intel was the first to use holographic images on Pentium II/III processors. More recently a similar scam discovered in the Philippines prompted AMD to launch the 'processor in a box' logo.
AMD is now going to some lengths to make sure the new holographic logo is uncopyable. a 3-D holographic label produced using Dupont Izon technology. The logo consists of a three-dimensional view surrounding the AMD Arrow logo that shows dots arranged in a pattern from one to four dots as it is seen from various angles.
