Microsoft tells IE8 testers to be wary of XP SP3 updates
12:00PM, Monday 12th May 2008
Microsoft has warned that anyone installing the Windows XP SP3 update on a PC or Mac running the Internet Explorer 8 beta will no longer be able to downgrade to either IE6 or 7.
Jane Maliouta, IE program manager, explained that this is to avoid a conflict between the SP3's support for IE6 and IE7 and the user's existing IE6/7 set-ups in SP2.
"We strongly recommend uninstalling IE8 Beta 1 prior to upgrading to Windows XP SP3 to eliminate any deployment issues and install IE8 Beta 1 after XPSP3 is on your machine," she said on the IE Blog.
IE8 beat 1 was released in March, with a strong, if belated, emphasis on web standards. To that end it includes a feature for recognising sites that were coded for older, less-standards-compliant versions of the web browser.
