XP SP3 delayed due to bug 8:12AM, Wednesday 30th April 2008
The release of Windows XP SP3 to the web has been delayed due to a bug.

"In the last few days, we have uncovered a compatibility issue between Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS) and both Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1," says Chris Keroack, release manager of Windows Serviceability, in a statement released on the TechNet forum.

"In order to make sure customers have the best possible experience, we have decided to delay releasing Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) to the web."

The update to the aging operating system was due to be released to the general public via automatic update and download yesterday, but this has now been put on hold.

Microsoft says it is currently testing a fix, which will resolve the issue. A filter will be installed to prevent the download for RMS users, and once that is in place it will launch the update for all users.

The software was released to manufacturers last week, with Microsoft seemingly keen to down play its benefits, "Windows XP SP3 includes all previously released updates for the operating system, as well as a small number of new additions that should not significantly change the Windows XP experience," read a statement at the time of the release.

Microsoft was unavailable for comment at the time of writing.
