Verdict: Power comes at a high price. It may be extremely fast, but the asking price is ludicrous.

The 8800GTX has been around a while, but it's still a beast of a graphics card. It's very long and uses a dual slot design, though at least this means the huge amount of heat generated by its high-powered chips can be expelled from the back of the PC's case instead of building up inside to overheat your other components.

Inno3D's GTX was the fastest performer overall in our benchmarks this time, with very strong scores in all three game tests. It scored a huge 94.9fps in our Prey test, easily the fastest we've ever seen. There's no benefit to such a massive frame rate in gameplay, but the ability to achieve it proves the card will be able to handle even higher detail levels and more demanding titles. The 768MB of RAM means that it can deal with games with lots of texture detail without any trouble. It still wasn't quite as quick in our DX10 Call of Juarez test as the 2900XT, though.

If you need lots of graphics power, you'll be better off buying the much cheaper 2900XT, or better yet buying two 8800GTs and running them in parallel using SLI. The GTX's performance simply doesn't justify its price.
