Verdict:
The right combination of features at a sensible price. A flexible plug layout, excellent software and good battery life.
APC's Back-UPS ES 700VA has a power rating of 700VA and 405W, enough for a medium-spec PC. You might need more for a top-end system.
The ES 700VA has four battery backup sockets and four surge protection sockets, all standard 3-pin, so it could keep your broadband router and printer going as well as your PC and monitor. It has a PC USB connection and APC's PowerChute software, which can save open documents and shut down a Windows PC. It also enables Windows' laptop power management, so you can set your PC to save its state to disk and go into hibernate mode.
The ES 700VA kept our test PC going for 27 minutes at idle, 13 minutes and 22 seconds under load. The Belkins did better, but at a price.
