Cowon iAudio D2   [Computer Buyer]
COMPANY: Cowon PRICE: £125inc VAT

Verdict: Feature-packed player with touchscreen technology to navigate your tracks. The D2 impressed us, but its simplistic library management and high price are minus points.

The iAudio D2 is one of the priciest players on test, which is pretty alarming considering its meagre 2GB capacity. A 4GB version costs £150, and when bought with a 4GB card for its SD slot at £165, it starts to look better value.

The 2.5-inch screen is not only a decent size but also touch-sensitive,

providing a friendly and effective control system for the player's varied functions. The screen also makes video playback look superb, although its colours aren't quite as accurate as the Sony's. Music libraries are browsed by folder rather than by artist, album and so on, so you'll need to maintain a sensible folder structure and give your MP3s names that begin with their track number. Windows Media Player 11 can help with both these tasks.

You can record tracks from analogue sources via the built-in microphone, FM radio or an optional line input cable, and there's an optional TV-out cable too, making this the most feature-packed player on test. The battery lasted for over 50 hours, and can be charged from your PC via USB or with the supplied mains charger. Sound quality was second only to the Sony, with detailed, full-bodied performances from both the player itself and the supplied headphones.
