Tools for the job
This may all sound a bit daunting, but you can make it a lot easier on yourself by downloading and installing some free software. To convert video footage, get SUPER from www.erightsoft.com/super. It's a user-friendly encoder that can convert videos to lots of different formats using the supplied codecs.
If you want to edit video using Windows Movie Maker or similar, first install ffdshow from sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow and Xvid from www.xvid.org. You can then use Super to convert the video to an MPEG-4 AVI with MP3 audio, and import the result into your video editing program.
