The Canon puts in a respect-able performance in most areas, but without the good looks of its Ixus stablemates, it remains a fairly unexciting camera.

Image Quality

Colour accuracy both indoors and out was pretty good, but although the pictures were undoubtedly rich, they were often a touch too dark. It wasn't hard to fix this problem, with the manual controls on the camera or with the supplied software, but we'd much prefer not to have to worry

about it.

Throughout most of our test shots, focus was nothing less than impeccable. However, the Canon struggled when we switched to macro mode for close-ups, failing even at a distance of 20cm.

Features

A lack of rechargeable batteries or a decent amount of memory means you'll have to spend another £40 to get this camera working properly. There's very little in the way of extra features either, except for a clever panorama mode that leaves the edge of the previous shot onscreen to help line up the next. And it ties in nicely with the PhotoStitch software that creates panoramas with a minimum of effort.

Design

The Canon isn't much of a looker and it's fairly heavy, but the controls are well laid out and the screen is bright. The delay before and between taking pictures isn't bad, but those used to a film camera might be frustrated.

Overall

Excellent focus is the Canon's only outstanding feature, but as none of the others really struggle in this department, it's not enough to attract our interest.
