Samsung: Camera phones will squeeze DSC 10:26AM, Friday 18th October 2002
Camera phones will erode the market share of digital still cameras (DSCs), said Sang Jin Park, executive VP and deputy general manager of Samsung Electronics.

Park said that Samsung will launch a new mobile phone next year with a built-in camera, delivering a resolution of three million pixels, up from the current one million pixels. He is optimistic that the phone will be a hit and attract consumers who are also buying DSCs.Park further said that the driving force behind mobile phone sales next year will be phones with a DSC, a colour-display, dozens of melodious ring tones and support for multimedia messaging services (MMS). This trend will inevitably hurt the sales of DSCs, said Park.Park said that people carry their mobile phones around for an average of 14-16 hours each day - a business advantage that no other IA product can match. He said that with the push from mobile phone vendors, the market for camera phones will take off with accelerating speed next year.A DSC vendor, however, expressed doubts that the camera phones are in competition with DSCs, citing DSC's strengths in changing focus and providing a higher picture resolution.
