Mandrake takes mobile approach 4:43PM, Thursday 16th September 2004
Mandrake has announced a new version of its Linux-based operating system, version 10.1.

As yet, it's falls under the Community class - meaning that Mandrake will wait for any bug fixes and adjustments from developers using the system before launching it as an official commercial product.

But the feature-set is pretty much frozen. This time round, Mandrake has taken a mobile approach, adding

support for Intel's Centrino platform, wireless use of 'hotspots' and Bluetooth for synchronising mobile phones and PDAs.

With battery life an ever-present issue with laptops, 10.1 includes a set of power-management tools grouped together in a user interface to make accessing and using them easier.

The distribution also includes the new version 4.5 of Mandrake's own package management system - urpmi - making installing programs that much easier.

The system includes the GNOME 2.6 and KDE 3.3 desktops, the latest versions of Mozilla, Open Office and the Gimp (image editing).

And developers can get to grips with the latest version of the GCC compiler, Kdeveloper developer tool set, and GDB debugger.

ISO images are available for download or ordered on DVD from the Mandrake website.
