UPDATED: Microsoft widens Mesh 10:16AM, Thursday 17th July 2008
Microsoft has opened the doors to its Live Mesh data synchronisation cloud a little wider.

Unveiled to handful of users in April, Live Mesh aims to enable users to access pictures, documents and other data from anywhere and at any time.

Users get 5GB of online space to synchronise files between multiple PCs, files

that are also available on the web from any computer, provided it runs Windows XP or Vista. Mac and mobile support is promised.

Microsoft will doubtless be hoping that the launch of Live Mesh does not run into the same problems that Apple had with the launch of its MobileMe cloud service over the weekend, though Microsoft has the considerable advantage of not having to transition tens if not hundreds of thousands of users from a previous online platform. And unlike Live Mesh, the Apple service supports PCs, Macs and mobile devices in the shape of the iPhone and iPod touch.

Live Mesh is available at mesh.com.

UPDATE: Microsoft has not fully opened Mesh for now, rather it has doubled the number of people who can sign up for the Tech Preview, on a first-com, first-served basis
