Verdict:
Keenly priced, but outclassed by the FZ18.
The S8000fd is Fuji's first superzoom with optical image stabilisation. They seem to have nailed it first time, giving reliably blur-free photos where other cameras falter. Performance isn't great, taking at least a second to focus and around 2.5 between shots, but there are extensive continuous shooting options. Image quality is generally excellent, but noise and detail-killing noise reduction take their toll except in direct sunlight. The price is still extremely attractive for such a capable camera, but bear in mind that you'll also need to budget for four AA batteries and a charger.
